"They prophesy a lie to you"

Text: Jeremiah 27:14

EXPOSING THE FALSE PROPHETS

Jeremiah had to expose the false prophets. The LORD had given him many clear messages in the past. They had all come to pass! The false prophets were preaching lies!

“‘Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets
who speak to you, saying,
‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’
for they prophesy a lie to you;
for I have not sent them,’ says the LORD,
‘yet they prophesy a lie in My name, that I may drive you out,
and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.'”
Jeremiah 27:14-15

1. “Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying,
‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy a lie to you”

a) The message of the false prophets.

i) Zedekiah was encouraged not to serve the king of Babylon.

ii) This would mean open rebellion.

b) Analysis of their message.

i) They were proclaiming a lie.

ii) God had not told them to rebel against the king of Babylon.

2. “‘For I have not sent them,’ says the LORD, yet they prophesy a lie in My name”

a) These false prophets were using God’s name.

b) But they were, in fact, prophesying lies.

3. “That I may drive you out, and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you”

a) If Zedekiah listened to them, he would go against what God had commanded.

b) The results would be disastrous.

i) The people would be driven out of their land (Judah).

ii) They would perish.

iii) The false prophets would also perish.

c) God would personally punish all who disobeyed His clear commands given by Jeremiah the prophet.
