"If you put me to death"

Text: Jeremiah 26:15

WITH GREAT COURAGE

Jeremiah exercised great courage as he faced his enemies. They had relentlessly persecuted him for years! God had enabled him to stand up against them with great courage.

“As for me, here I am, in your hand;
do with me as seems good and proper to you.
But know for certain that if you put me to death,
you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves,
on this city, and on its inhabitants;
for truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
Jeremiah 26:14-15

1. “As for me, here I am, in your hand; do with me as seems good and proper to you”

a) Jeremiah had once been afraid of his enemies (Jeremiah 12:1-6; 15:10-21).

b) That was in the past!

c) Jeremiah was no longer shackled by fear.

i) He was in the hands of his enemies.

ii) He was prepared to accept whatever they had planned to do against him.

2. “But know for certain that if you put me to death,
you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants”

a) If they should put him to death,

b) They would have shed innocent blood.

c) The guilt would be on:

i) His enemies directly.

ii) On the city if they had consented to his death.

iii) On the inhabitants if they stood for this injustice.

3. “For truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing”

a) The LORD had indeed sent him to preach this word.

b) Jeremiah was the prophet of the LORD.

c) They must consider carefully what they were planning to do with him.

d) This was not an idle threat!
