"I will punish the king of Babylon"
Text: Jeremiah 25:12
JUDGEMENT OF THE BABYLONIANS
The Babylonians had conquered Judah and many other nations. The king of Babylon would be judged for his iniquities. Babylon would also become desolate!
“‘Then it will come to pass, when seventy years are completed,
that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,
the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,’ says the LORD;
‘and I will make it a perpetual desolation.
So I will bring on that land all My words which I have pronounced against it,
all that is written in this book,
which Jeremiah has prophesied concerning all the nations.
(For many nations and great kings shall be served by them also;
and I will repay them according to their deeds
and according to the works of their own hands.)'”
Jeremiah 25:12-14
1. “Then it will come to pass, when seventy years are completed”
a) Judah would serve the Babylonians for 70 years.
b) But at the end of those years, Babylon would also be judged.
2. The king of Babylon
a) He would be judged.
b) The nation he led would also be judged.
c) The king and his kingdom would become “a perpetual desolation”.
d) Judah would be given a second chance, but the ruin of the Babylonians would be complete and final.
3. “So I will bring on that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied concerning all the nations”
a) Jeremiah’s prophecies were mainly pronounced against Judah.
b) His prophecies focused on the wickedness of Judah.
c) Severe punishment would be God’s judgment against the wicked and their evil ways.
d) All nations that pursued wickedness would see his prophecies fulfilled in judgment.
4. “(For many nations and great kings shall be served by them also; and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the works of their own hands.)”
a) The Babylonian Empire
i) Babylon led the coalition of nations that became the Babylonian Empire.
ii) All who served under Nebuchadnezzar would be punished.
b) God’s judgment would be meted against the wicked:
i) According to their wicked deeds.
ii) According to the works of their own hands.
