"Is not My word like a fire?"

Text: Jeremiah 23:29

THE WORD OF THE LORD

Once again, the LORD sent out a strong reminder to all, concerning His holy Word! It cannot be taken lightly!

“‘The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream;
And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully.
What is the chaff to the wheat?’ says the LORD.
‘Is not My word like a fire?’ says the LORD,
‘And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?'”
Jeremiah 23:28-29

1. “The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream”

a) If a person claims he has a dream from the LORD.

b) He must then be able to do the following:

i) Recount the dream clearly.

ii) Explain the meaning of the dream accurately.

c) He cannot use the so-called dream.

i) To lead people astray.

ii) To cause people to forget God and His word.

2. “And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully”

a) The person who claims to have a word from God.

b) He must speak God’s word faithfully.

i) He cannot subtract from it.

ii) He must never add to it!

iii) Faithfulness is to be evidenced in accurate teaching of God’s word.

3. “‘What is the chaff to the wheat?’ says the LORD”

a) God’s word is wheat that will nourish a person.

b) Chaff cannot be eaten and is fit only for the fire!

4. Two powerful imageries were employed

a) The imagery of Fire: “‘Is not My word like a fire?’ says the LORD.”

i) Fire purifies silver and gold.

ii) Fire burns and consumes dross.

b) The imagery of a hammer: “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”

i) The word of God will destroy the false prophets and their ministry.

ii) Anything that is false will be broken in pieces ultimately.
