"You are Gilead to Me"

Text: Jeremiah 22:6

CHOICE PIECES OF LAND

There were certain regions in Israel or in its vicinity that were greatly prized. Gilead and Lebanon were two such areas. These regions were used as imagery to describe God’s love for His people.

“For thus says the LORD to the house of the king of Judah:
‘You are Gilead to Me,
The head of Lebanon;
Yet I surely will make you a wilderness,
Cities which are not inhabited.
I will prepare destroyers against you,
Everyone with his weapons;
They shall cut down your choice cedars
And cast them into the fire.'”
Jeremiah 22:6-7

1. “For thus says the LORD to the house of the king of Judah:
‘You are Gilead to Me, the head of Lebanon'”

a) Gilead and Lebanon were famed for:

i) Their land.

ii) Trees like the Cedar grew to great heights.

b) As many liked these lands so God honoured Israel.

i) He loved the people.

ii) He honoured them.

2. “Yet I surely will make you a wilderness, cities which are not inhabited”

a) But God would make Israel a wilderness.

b) The cities would become uninhabited.

c) The reasons have been stated many times before.

i) The nation had forsaken God.

ii) The people had become wicked.

3. “I will prepare destroyers against you, everyone with his weapons;
they shall cut down your choice cedars and cast them into the fire”

a) The inhabitants of the cities enjoyed great luxury.

b) They used choice cedars to build their homes.

c) But God would bring destroyers (Babylonians).

i) They would destroy Gilead and Lebanon.

ii) The fine wood would be thrown into the fire.
