"Go down to the house of the king of Judah"

Text: Jeremiah 22:1

A MINISTRY TO THE ROYAL FAMILY

Ministry to the proud inhabitants of Jerusalem must have been hard. But ministry to the royal family must have been vastly more difficult. Nevertheless, God’s word must be proclaimed to them.

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Go down to the house of the king of Judah,
and there speak this word, and say,
‘Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah,
you who sit on the throne of David,
you and your servants and your people who enter these gates!””
Jeremiah 22:1-2

1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and there speak this word'”

a) Jeremiah must not be intimidated by the king in any way.

i) Zedekiah may be the king of Judah.

ii) But he is still just a man.

b) Jeremiah is a servant of the LORD.

i) And the LORD is the Master of all.

ii) He is God Most High.

c) Jeremiah must speak the word that the LORD would give him:

i) With courage.

ii) With confidence.

2. “And say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David, you and your servants and your people who enter these gates!'”

a) The message Jeremiah speaks was “the word of the LORD”.

b) The addressees

i) The king of Judah who sits on the throne of David.

ii) The king’s servants

iii) The king’s people who enter these royal gates.

c) The addressees were probably:

i) The Royal Family.

ii) The people who attended the court of King Zedekiah.

iii) They were held in some awe and esteem by people.

iv) But none of them impressed the Lord in the slightest.
