"Please inquire of the LORD for us"

Text: Jeremiah 21:2

A WORD FROM KING ZEDEKIAH

King Zedekiah was worried when Nebuchadnezzar made war against Judah. He had no choice but to send two people to Jeremiah to ask him to intercede for the nation.

“The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD
when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Melchiah,
and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,
‘Please inquire of the LORD for us,
for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us.
Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all His wonderful works,
that the king may go away from us.'”
Jeremiah 21:1-2

1. “The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying”

a) King Zedekiah
He was the last king of Judah to sit on the throne.
b) Occasion
Nebuchadnezzar had made war against Judah as Jeremiah had warned.
c) The King sent 2 people to see Jeremiah.
i) Pashhur the son of Melchiah.
(This was not the same Pashhur the son of Immer, Jeremiah 20:1)
ii) Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, a priest.

2. “Please inquire of the LORD for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all His wonderful works, that the king may go away from us”

a) They asked Jeremiah to pray to the Lord.
i) This is a request for Intercessory Prayer.
ii) Prayer could have been offered by anyone.
iii) But obviously, not everyone’s prayer produced good results.
b) The problem stated: Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon had declared war against Judah.
c) The Prayer request:
i) That God would show one of His marvelous works (a miracle).
ii) That Nebuchadnezzar would depart.
