"Your iniquity is marked before Me"

Text: Jeremiah 2:22

INIQUITY MARKED

Sin could be omission of obedience to God. Transgression could be trespassing of the Lord’s commandments. Iniquity is even more insidious. It is hidden in the heart’s intentions. It is invisible to the human eye, but not to God!

“‘For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap,
Yet your iniquity is marked before Me,’ says the Lord GOD.”
Jeremiah 2:22

1. “For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap”

a) Lye is used to make soap.
i) Lye by itself is caustic and can cause severe burns.
ii) Lye is sometimes used to remove bad stains.
b) “Much soap”
i) The imagery of lye and soap is used to describe an attempt to remove dirty stains.
ii) Much soap is often applied to remove stubborn stains.
c) Most stains can be removed:
i) By using strong lye.
ii) By using much soap.

2. “‘Yet your iniquity is marked before Me,’ says the Lord GOD”

a) The iniquity of the nation was like a stubborn stain on a garment.
b) No matter what human effort may be put in, the stain of iniquity remains.
c) To the human eye, iniquity is not immediately obvious.
d) But in the eyes of God, the iniquity of Judah is like sin and transgression
They are plain and visible to His eyes.
e) They are so obvious, they are “marked”.

These words came from the LORD Himself. These must be given due heed!
