"The Valley of the Son of Hinnom"

Text: Jeremiah 19:2

A SECOND GRAPHIC LESSON

Jeremiah was once instructed to go to a Potter’s workshop (Jeremiah 18). There was a lesson that he learned and then conveyed to the nation of Judah. The Potter can change the shape of the vessel at will. So can God change what He is doing with His people?

In the second lesson involving the Potter and his vessel, there was another lesson to be learned. This was a more serious lesson.

“Thus says the LORD:
‘Go and get a potter’s earthen flask,
and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests.
And go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom,
which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate;
and proclaim there the words that I will tell you, and say,
‘Hear the word of the LORD,
O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place,
that whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle.”'”
Jeremiah 19:1-3

1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Go and get a potter’s earthen flask,
and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests.'”

a) An earthen flask
i) It could be an earthen bottle.
ii) This was a flask that has already been made.
b) Inviting some people to listen to this message:
i) Elders of the people.
ii) Elders of the priests.

2. “And go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate; and proclaim there the words that I will tell you”

a) The Valley of the Son of Hinnom
i) This was mentioned in Jeremiah 7:31-32.
ii) It was called the Valley of Slaughter.
b) In this infamous Valley:
i) King Ahaz sacrificed his son (2 Chronicles 28:3).
ii) King Manasseh sacrificed his children (2 Chronicles 33:6).
c) This Valley had become a dumping ground. A perpetual fire burned rubbish.

3. “And say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle.””

a) This word of the LORD was for:
i) The kings of Judah.
ii) The inhabitants of Jerusalem.
b) A solemn word of warning
i) God will bring a catastrophe on the land of Judah.
ii) The sins of the kings and the people will be judged.
iii) The catastrophe planned would reduce Judah to little more than a rubbish dump!
iv) Whoever hears of this judgment meted out would feel his ears tingling.
