"O LORD, my strength and my fortress"

Text: Jeremiah 16:19

JEREMIAH’S PERSONAL RESPONSE

Jeremiah no longer queried God’s Judgment. In his newly restored state, he was able to speak of trust in the Lord.

“O LORD, my strength and my fortress,
My refuge in the day of affliction,
The Gentiles shall come to You
From the ends of the earth and say,
‘Surely our fathers have inherited lies,
Worthlessness and unprofitable things.'”
Jeremiah 16:19

1. “O LORD, my strength and my fortress”

a) Jeremiah used to weep when hard truths were revealed (Jeremiah 8:18-22).
b) He had now found a deeper faith in the Lord.
c) God was now:
i) His strength.
ii) His fortress.

2. “My refuge in the day of affliction”

a) He accepted that there will be affliction.
b) But God would be his refuge.

3. “The Gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say”

a) Jeremiah’s new focus was on “The Gentiles”.
b) He was now able to see beyond the children of Judah.
c) These Gentiles:
i) They were to be found at “the ends of the earth”.
ii) They would turn to the Lord in new-found faith.

4. “Surely our fathers have inherited lies, worthlessness and unprofitable things”

a) The confession of the Gentiles.
b) They will decry the following:
i) The lies that they had inherited from their fathers.
ii) The idols were truly “worthless and unprofitable things”.
c) This was a new-found perspective of Jeremiah.
i) This must have been revealed by God.
ii) He was now able to see God’s plan of salvation extended to Gentiles.
