"My ways higher than your ways"

Text: Isaiah 55:9

DEALING WITH MAN’S ARROGANCE

There were many reasons why Israel stopped worshipping the LORD. One of the reasons was noted here. There were many who considered themselves as very wise. Some were even advisors to the king. They offered their counsel as if they were flawless in their thoughts!

“‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,’ says the LORD.
‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.'”
Isaiah 55:8-9

1. A humbling reminder.

a) God’s thoughts cannot be compared.

b) God’s ways are also greatly different.

c) To think that Man’s thoughts and ways are similar to God’s:

i) That is foolish thinking.

ii) That is spurious reasoning.

iii) It reflects Man’s sheer arrogance.

2. God’s ways are immeasurably higher.

a) The heavens are higher than the earth.

i) This is observable.

ii) This is obvious.

b) So are God’s ways higher than Man’s ways.

c) Similarly, God’s thoughts are far greater than Man’s thoughts.

3. A Biblical description of Man.

“What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honour.”
Psalm 8:4-5

a) Man is a little lower than angels.

b) It is by God’s grace that he has glory and honour.

c) Man is far inferior to the LORD.

d) Man is but a creature made by his Creator.
