"My way is hidden from the LORD"

Text: Isaiah 40:27

THE MISGIVINGS OF ISRAEL

Unfortunately, Israel seemed to have many misgivings about the LORD. Two misgivings were highlighted in this text.

“Why do you say, O Jacob,
And speak, O Israel:
‘My way is hidden from the LORD,
And my just claim is passed over by my God’?
Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the LORD,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.”
Isaiah 40:27-28

1. Two misgivings.

a) That Israel’s way seems to be “hidden from the LORD”.

i) Israel is upset that God did not seem to help the nation.

ii) The nation felt that its ways were “hidden” from the sight of God.

b) That Israel’s “just claim” was passed over by the LORD.

i) Israel felt that it had “just claims”.

ii) But God did not honour Israel’s “just claims”.

c) No specifics were given.

i) But it is unlikely that these misgivings had any merit in them.

ii) Israel may have prayed but their prayers were not answered.

iii) The nation had blamed God for not hearing their prayers.

d) God had not failed Israel.
Israel had failed to live up to God’s Law!

2. God’s Answer to Israel.

a) Israel’s problem was that of ignorance.

b) The nation lacked genuine faith in God.

c) Who the LORD is:

i) The LORD is the everlasting God.

ii) The Creator of the earth does not faint with weariness.

iii) His understanding is unsearchable.
