"Behold, the Lord GOD shall come"

Text: Isaiah 40:10

THE MINISTRY OF THE MESSIAH

This text describes the ministry of the Messiah when He comes. His work would be what the Lord God Himself would be doing!

“Behold, the Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand,
And His arm shall rule for Him;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.
He will feed His flock like a shepherd;
He will gather the lambs with His arm,
And carry them in His bosom,
And gently lead those who are with young.”
Isaiah 40:10-11

1. “Behold, the Lord GOD shall come”

a) Technically, this is a description of the LORD’s coming to Israel.

b) But in truth, this is a Messianic prophecy that describes the work of the Messiah.

c) This is the underlying thought behind what the Lord Jesus was saying when He explained why He healed a man who had an infirmity for 38 years (John 5:19-20).

2. The strength of the Messiah prophesied.

a) He will come with a strong hand.

b) His arm would rule for Him.

i) Thus, the Lord Jesus cleansed the Temple at Jerusalem.

ii) Similarly, He refuted all the wrong teachings and practices
of the scribes and Pharisees.

iii) There was tremendous strength in His life and ministry.

iv) The might and power of the Lord Jesus were evidenced
in the miracles He performed.

3. His reward and His works.

a) He rewarded people for their faith in Him.

b) His works were many and mighty.

c) They displayed the power of the Messiah.

4. The Messiah’s work as a Shepherd.

a) This was evident in the way He cared for all who came to Him in faith.

i) Gathering of lambs is an expression of affection.

ii) The Lord Jesus taught His disciples to care for little ones (Matthew 18:1-14).

b) The Lord Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd (John 10).

i) He loves His sheep.

ii) He knows each one.

iii) He would lay down His life for His flock.
