"I will defend this city"

Text: Isaiah 37:35

A GLORIOUS PROMISE OF GOD

The LORD gave a tremendous word of encouragement to Judah. The king of Assyria would not be able to conquer Jerusalem. In fact, he would not even be able to enter into the city, though he may have laid siege against it.

“Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria:
‘He shall not come into this city,
Nor shoot an arrow there,
Nor come before it with shield,
Nor build a siege mound against it.
By the way that he came,
By the same shall he return;
And he shall not come into this city,’
Says the LORD.
‘For I will defend this city, to save it
For My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.'”
Isaiah 37:33-35

1. A solemn word announced.

a) Concerning the king of Assyria.

b) His plans:

i) To conquer Jerusalem.

ii) To rule Judah.

iii) He had already begun initial plans of laying siege.

2. God’s Plans.

a) Sennacherib would not be allowed to enter into Jerusalem.

b) His battle plans were known to the LORD.

i) To attack Jerusalem with arrows.

ii) To launch an assault.

iii) To build a successful siege.

iv) All these plans would fail.

c) Sennacherib would return to Assyria.

i) By the same way he came, so would he return.

ii) His battle plans against Jerusalem, Judah would be abortive.

4. A great promise made.

a) God Himself would defend Jerusalem.

b) He would save the city from being destroyed.

5. Two reasons were declared.

a) For God’s own sake.

i) God would remember His covenant.

ii) He would honour His word of promise.

b) For David’s sake.

i) God promised David that He would bless his offspring
who would rule righteously.

ii) Hezekiah, the current ruler had sought to rule with an upright heart.

iii) Hence God would save Jerusalem for David’s sake.
