"The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this"

Text: Isaiah 37:32

A WORD TO THE FAITHFUL

While the LORD gave a rebuke to the Assyrians, He gave a word of assurance to the faithful. He will protect them and provide for them.

“This shall be a sign to you:
You shall eat this year such as grows of itself,
And the second year what springs from the same;
Also in the third year sow and reap,
Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.
And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah
Shall again take root downward,
And bear fruit upward.
For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant,
And those who escape from Mount Zion.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”
Isaiah 37:30-32

1. A three-year outlook.

a) The first year.

i) Judah would have to live off the land.

ii) Whatever had grown in the fields would be their food.

b) The second year.

i) The same provision.

ii) Whatever the earth produced would be what they would consume.

c) The third year.

i) Judah may sow and reap.

ii) They may plant vineyards and partake of the fruit from the vines.

2. Concerning the remnant.

a) Some had fled for fear of the Assyrians.

b) But they will return and set down roots in Judah again.

c) And as they continue to practise righteousness, they will grow and become fruitful.

3. The promise of the LORD to the faithful remnant.

a) These had escaped from Jerusalem.

b) Why were they blessed if they had fled?

i) They had fled from evil.

ii) They had fled from idolatrous practices.

iii) They had fled for good and righteous reasons.

c) The LORD promised that He would care for the faithful remnant.

i) His zeal would see to the performance of what He had planned for the righteous.

ii) He would see to their protection as the LORD of hosts.
