"A precious cornerstone"

Text: Isaiah 28:16

GLORIOUS PROPHECY

The Prophecy given to Isaiah covered at least three perspectives. One focused on the time of the Exile, another focused on the leaders in Jerusalem. This particular perspective focused on the Messiah and the work that He would do.

“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
‘Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.'”
Isaiah 28:16

1. A brief review of Zion.

a) The Temple era ended with its destruction.

b) The Exile of 70 years came next.

c) A new perspective was prophesied.

2. A New foundation would be laid.

a) The LORD Himself would lay the Foundation.

b) The Cornerstone was carefully described:

i) A tried stone.

ii) A precious cornerstone.

iii) A precious foundation.

c) Everyone who believes:

i) No one needs to stumble.

ii) No one needs to act hastily.

iii) No one needs to be ashamed of faith in the Lord.

iv) That Cornerstone was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

3. An Important Cross reference.

a) The Apostle Peter made this observation in his writings.

“Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
‘Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.’
Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,
‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.'”
1 Peter 2:6-7

b) He cited two texts and combined them together as he wrote 1 Peter.

i) Isaiah 28:16-17

ii) Psalm 118:22

c) The reference is to the Lord Jesus as the Messianic Cornerstone.

i) He is the tried cornerstone.

ii) He is precious to all who know Him.

iii) He is the foundation of the Church.

d) The new Temple would be the Church, the Body of Christ the Lord.
