"You scornful men"

Text: Isaiah 28:14

THE SCORNFUL LEADERS OF JERUSALEM

What caused the exile of God’s people? One of the leading causes would be the ruling hierarchy.

“Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scornful men,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death,
And with Sheol we are in agreement.
When the overflowing scourge passes through,
It will not come to us,
For we have made lies our refuge,
And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.'”
Isaiah 28:14-15

1. The leaders of Jerusalem.

These would include the following:

a) The royal family (Kings and princes)

b) The judges

c) The priests

d) The counsellors/ advisors

2. What characterized these leaders?

a) The word is “scornful”.

b) It stems from arrogance of the spirit.

c) The leaders scorned the LORD and His word proclaimed by the prophets.

3. What the leaders believed in:

a) That they had a covenant with death and Sheol.

b) They rejected the Covenant with God and chose their so-called
covenant with death that is totally untrue.

c) They knew that “the scourge” of death was coming in the wake of
the impending war.

d) But the leaders were propagating the lie that Death would not come
to the people in Jerusalem.

4. Falsehood and Lies.

a) The leaders had convinced themselves that they had a covenant with Sheol.

b) This was just simply a false teaching that they now embraced.

c) This was an outright Lie that they propagated among the people
who lived in Jerusalem!

i) In this Lie many had taken refuge.

ii) The leaders had hidden the truth behind this false hope.

iii) The leaders had hidden themselves at the expense of thousands of people
who would die because of this falsehood.
