"Fury is not in Me"

Text: Isaiah 27:4

ISRAEL’S STRUGGLES WITH THE LORD

Israel fought many wars with surrounding enemy nations. Sadly, Israel saw the LORD in a negative way. The idolatry practised for so long caused the people to think all kinds of foolish and sinful thoughts about God!

“Fury is not in Me.
Who would set briers and thorns
Against Me in battle?
I would go through them,
I would burn them together.
Or let him take hold of My strength,
That he may make peace with Me;
And he shall make peace with Me.”
Isaiah 27:4-5

1. A strong word of assurance.

a) God was not furious with Israel.

b) He had to chasten the nation for its wickedness and sinfulness.

c) But fury was not in the LORD.

2. Foolish barriers were set up against the LORD.

a) The nation saw the LORD as an enemy.

b) It resisted God in every way possible.

c) Briers and thorns were set up as natural barriers to forestall enemies.

d) But these would not stop the LORD in any way.

3. The power of the LORD.

a) He would burn the briers and thorns easily.

b) He would simply brush them aside.

c) But He had not come to battle Israel!

d) Israel was wrong to think that God had come in fury to destroy the nation.

4. The LORD extended a kind invitation.

a) He offered His strength.

b) He offered peace as well.

c) God had come:

i) To restore the broken relationship.

ii) To offer His help in strengthening the nation.

iii) This offer must not be taken lightly!
