"He will bring down their pride"

Text: Isaiah 25:11

THE MIGHTY HAND OF GOD

Isaiah’s prophetic understanding enabled him to look at what the LORD would do against the enemies of Judah. These enemies were filled with hateful pride. Moab was not the only nation that would be dealt with.

“And He will spread out His hands in their midst
As a swimmer reaches out to swim,
And He will bring down their pride
Together with the trickery of their hands.
The fortress of the high fort of your walls
He will bring down, lay low,
And bring to the ground, down to the dust.”
Isaiah 25:11-12

1. The imagery of a swimmer.

a) The focus here is the hands of the swimmer.

i) The hands reach out to swim powerfully.

ii) The LORD will also use His “hands”.

b) The LORD however is not swimming.

i) He is not using His hands for swimming.

ii) He will bring down the pride of Moab and other proud nations.

iii) They had used their hands to trick and to plunder people.

iv) God will use His hands to bring them down.

2. The high walls of protection.

a) Powerful enemy nations built high and strong walls.

b) They believed that their walls would give them full protection.

c) They may offer some protection from human hands.

d) But there will be no protection from God’s hands.

e) The LORD will cause these high walls and the fortresses to be brought
to the ground.

f) He will destroy all walls and fortresses when Judgment is meted out.

g) This was the faith that Isaiah had in the LORD.
