Day 19

"The terror of the LORD"

Text: Isaiah 2:10

THE JUDGMENT TO COME

Isaiah proclaimed that the LORD would come to the nation of Judah one day and He will bring about divine judgment. “In that day” was a phrase chosen to describe that fateful event when the nation would be judged for its sinful and wicked ways.

“Enter into the rock, and hide in the dust,
From the terror of the LORD
And the glory of His majesty.
The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,
The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.”
Isaiah 2:10-11

1. The coming judgment from the LORD described.

a) That day would bring terror to the unrepentant sinner.

b) Two aspects were highlighted.

c) “The terror of the LORD”

i) To the unrepentant, divine judgment would be met with great fear (terror).

ii) To the wicked and wilful, the terror of the LORD would be felt deeply.

d) “The glory of His majesty”

i) The LORD would manifest Himself in His power and authority.

ii) The glory of the LORD would be seen.

iii) To the righteous and faithful, the manifestation of God would be awesome.

2. The people who would fear the manifestation of the LORD.

a) The lofty people.

i) They put on airs.

ii) They despise the poor.

iii) They would be humbled when the LORD comes to judge the nation.

iv) Their lofty spirit would be cut down to size.

b) The haughtiness of the arrogant.

i) Some take pride in their wealth.

ii) Others take pride in their might.

iii) They abuse those whom they have oversight.

iv) Before the LORD, they would be forced to bow the knee.

3. The LORD God:

a) He alone is full of true majesty.

b) He alone deserves to be exalted.

c) He will be exalted indeed “in that day” when He comes as Judge of all nations.
