"Partakers of the Holy Spirit..."

Text: Hebrews 6:4

BLESSINGS THAT MUST NEVER BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED III

One of the most important blessings that God has given to mankind must be the Holy Spirit. What a privilege it is to be

“Partakers of the Holy Spirit.”
Hebrews 6:4e

We will need to pay close attention to the text to determine what the author was trying to say when he wrote about being a “partaker of the Holy Spirit”.

1. The experience of king Saul

a) He stands out as an example of one who may be described as a partaker of the Holy Spirit.
b) The prophet Samuel informed Saul after his anointing as king that he would have the following experience:-

Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you,
and you will prophesy with them and be turned into
another man.”
1 Samuel 10:6

c) This prophetic word was literally fulfilled.

“So it was… that God gave him another heart;
and all those signs came to pass that day.”
1 Samuel 10:9

“…there was a group of prophets to meet him.
then the Spirit of God came upon him,
and he prophesied among them.”
1 Samuel 10:10

d) There is no mistaking the fact that Saul was a partaker of the Holy Spirit.

2. The stubborn sinfulness of king Saul:-

a) He deliberately disobeyed God’s commands (Cf. 1 Samuel 15:22-23).
b) He rejected the word of the Lord (Cf. 1 Samuel 15:23).

THE SIN OF DELIBERATELY REJECTING THE SPIRIT OF GOD

The story of king Saul ended with his tragic death! But his misery began long before the hour of his death. Instead of having the Spirit of God leading him, Saul had a distressing spirit that would plague him with a sense of despondency from time to time (Cf. 1 Samuel 16:14, 23).

Saul never did come back to God. His life is a powerful illustration of what happens to a person who deliberately sins against God repeatedly.
