"And have tasted the heavenly gift..."

Text: Hebrews 6:4

BLESSINGS THAT MUST NEVER BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED II

Another blessing that we must never take for granted is found in the phrase “And have tasted the heavenly gift”.

1. Tasted

a) This is an interesting word employed
b) The following text in Ezekiel 2-3 illustrates the idea of “eating”
i) God commanded Ezekiel to eat what He gave him (Cf. Ezekiel 2:8).
ii) God caused Ezekiel to eat the scroll given to him (Cf. Ezekiel 3:2)
iii) God commanded Ezekiel to fill his stomach through eating the scroll (Cf. Ezekiel 3:3).
iv) The reference was to the word of God.

2. Tasted the heavenly gift

a) There was no specific mention as to what this “heavenly gift” was.
b) However we may pursue the idea of “eating” and extend it to John 6.
i) Jesus said that He was the Bread of Life (Cf. John 6:35, 48)
ii) He was the living bread from heaven (Cf. John 6:51)
iii) He who ate this Living Bread would never hunger or thirst (Cf. John 6:35)
c) The Jews in the days of Jesus certainly tasted the heavenly gift.
i) They also turned away from Jesus and abandoned Him (Cf. John 6:66)
ii) It would be impossible for them to return to Jesus because they had deliberately turned their back to Him.

A COMFORTING WORD

The disciples of Jesus were given a choice as to whether they would continue to follow Him or turn away from Him. May we echo the words of the apostle Peter.

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words
of eternal life”
John 6:68
