"And this we will do..."

Text: Hebrews 6:3

THE PURSUIT OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Every believer should aspire to make good progress towards spiritual maturity! The following text encourages us to make every possible effort to achieve this noble goal.

“And this we will do if God permits.”
Hebrews 6:3

There are two aspects that we must seek to bear in mind at all times.

1. “And this we will do”

a) This emphasizes the human aspect.
b) We are essentially responsible to make every effort to cultivate spiritual maturity.
i) We are to grow in our understanding of God.
ii) We are to grow in our appreciation of who Jesus is.
iii) We are to grow in our faith.
iv) We are to resist sin steadfastly.
v) We are to cultivate our relationship with God.

2. “If God permits”

a) Human effort is insufficient to determine growth and spiritual maturity.
b) Even in the matter of spiritual maturity we must say “If God permits”.

3. Are there reasons why God may not permit further progress in maturity?

a) It is possible to sin so grievously against God that spiritual growth is limited.
b) Two classic examples may be cited:-
i) The nation of Israel could not make further progress (Cf. Isaiah 6:9-10)
ii) The nation of Judah could not make further progress too (Cf. Jeremiah 7:14-16)

Both nations were punished for their innumerable sins against God! The Lord did not permit further growth because of the gravity of their sins!
