We have a great High Priest...

Text: Hebrews 4:14

WHAT ABOUT HUMAN FAILINGS?

The heart is surely stirred to desire and to find genuine faith that would entitle the individual the privilege of entering into God’s eternal rest! But what about human failings? How should we cope with the tendency to sin against God?

JESUS OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST

The author of Hebrews offers an excellent answer to the problem of human sinfulness. We may draw great encouragement from the following text.

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
who has passed through the heavens; Jesus the Son of God,
let us hold fast our confession.”
Hebrews 4:14

1. First things first

a) The issue of believing in Jesus must first be ascertained.
b) Is there faith in Jesus as the Son of God?
c) Is there faith in His atoning death for all mankind (Hebrews 2:9-10)?
d) Only when there is genuine faith is there the assurance that we have hope of entering into an eternal rest (Hebrews 4:9-10).

2. Dealing with our sin problems

a) The problem of sin will never go away (Cf. Romans 6-7).
b) Mercifully we can battle sin through the power of the Spirit of God (Cf. Romans 8).
c) We also have another special provision from God: A great High Priest.

3. Jesus

a) He is indeed the Unique Son of God (Cf. Hebrews 1).
b) He is also our Great High Priest who intercedes for us (Cf. Hebrews 3:1; 4:14).
c) His position, as One who has passed through the heavens places Him in the best place to intercede on our sinful behalf.

LET US HOLD FAST OUR CONFESSION

The least we must do is to faithfully hold fast to our confession of faith in Jesus!
