"No creature hidden from His sight..."

Text: Hebrews 4:13

THE GOD OF THE SCRIPTURES

The author of Hebrews held a very strong view of the Scriptures! He believed that the Scriptures were of supernatural value and thus had a life and power of its own!

His view of the nature of the Scriptures is closely linked to his understanding of God. The following text obviously links the Lord to the Word of God.

“And there is no creature hidden from His sight,
but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him
to whom we must give account.”
Hebrews 4:13

1. And there is no creature hidden from His sight

We have a very clear statement about the Omniscience of God! Nothing lies hidden from God’s sight!

2. All things are naked and open (to God)

a) “All things” would also include the “thoughts and intents of the heart”.
b) This is a logical conclusion if we truly understand the nature of God.

3. The eyes of Him to whom we must give account

a) The factor of “accountability” is now added to good effect.
b) Every individual must give due consideration to this sobering thought.

The following texts back up this idea of accountability.

“And God requires an account of what is past.”
Ecclesiastes 3:15

“For we must all appear before the judgment of Christ,
that each one may receive the things done in the body,
according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
2 Corinthians 5:10

THE THRUST OF THESE STATEMENTS

What was the thrust of these two statements about the Word of God and the Lord (Hebrews 4:12-13)? The author was attempting to bring to a conclusion the need to heed God’s word (concerning the matter of entering into the eternal rest of the Lord).

No reader ought to think that he could somehow work around the clear word of admonition given. God’s word would see through him immediately. God Himself would be the Judge whose omniscience is to be feared! Whether one has genuine faith or a false one should not be trifled with. False faith would deny a person of eternal rest!
