The deceitfulness of sin...

Text: Hebrews 3:13

THE DEADLINESS OF SIN

Perhaps the deadliness of sin is to be found in the fact that sin wields the great weapon of deceit. Let us once again ponder this solemn word of advice.

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’
lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Hebrews 3:13

1. Lest any of you

a) No one is spared.
b) Everyone is in danger of being affected by sin.

2. Hardened

a) The historical Pharaoh is a classic example of having a hardened heart (Cf. Exodus 8:19, 32; 9:7, 35 etc)
b) The history of ancient Israel also displayed the fact that the nation was capable of having a hardened heart that sinned grievously against God (Cf. Psalm 78:8, 10-11, 17-18, 32, 36-37, 40-41)
c) That danger existed (in the days of the author of Hebrews and in our day too).

3. The deceitfulness of sin

a) Sin deceives in many ways.
i) It makes light of sinning against God.
ii) It makes a person procrastinates in dealing with the sin problem.
iii) It disguises the effect of sin upon the heart.
iv) It hardens the heart slowly.
v) It hardens the heart surreptitiously.
vi) It hardens the heart eventually.
b) A fearful consequence

Sin can harden the heart completely – to the point of no return!
