Exhort one another daily...

Text: Hebrews 3:13

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF UNBELIEF

The author of Hebrews offers very practical advice to the problem of unbelief.

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’
Lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Hebrews 3:13

The following thoughts are delineated for easier comprehension:-

1. Exhort one another daily

a) The problem of unbelief is seen as a “community” matter.
i) The individual must of course address this problem personally.
ii) The community of believers is asked to help the erring brother.
b) Exhort (parakaleite) daily
i) This word suggests the idea of “encouragement”.
ii) This work of encouraging or exhorting is a continuing one.
iii) It is to be done “daily”.

2. While it is called ‘Today’

a) There must be a special sense of urgency in this ministry of exhortation.
b) The word ‘Today’ suggests the following things:-
i) There may not be a ‘Tomorrow’.
ii) Repentance must be done with a sense of urgency.
iii) There can be no procrastination with reference to this sin of unbelief.
iv) There is a ‘Divine limitation’ with reference to responding to God.
v) God is not going to “wait forever” while an erring individual takes his “own sweet time” about dealing with the sin of unbelief.

The need of dealing with the sin of unbelief is still very urgent today!
