Let brotherly love continue.

Text: Hebrews 13:1

A GREAT THESIS

The author of Hebrews had the highest sense of motivation when he set out to write his book. His focus was to help his readers comprehend and appreciate the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ! The features of his literary skills include the following:-

1. Depth of knowledge

a) The Old Covenant
b) The New Covenant

2. Depth of insight

a) Jesus as the eternal Son of God.
b) Jesus as the great Apostle.
c) Jesus as the great High Priest.

3. Depth of application

a) The author was not just an academician.
b) He was deeply committed to encouraging his readers to make appropriate responses to each truth revealed.

GREAT EXHORTATION

The author of Hebrews devoted the last chapter of his book to “exhortation”. The first word honoured the teaching of the Lord Jesus on the subject of love for each other.

“Let brotherly love continue.”

Hebrews 13:1

1. Brotherly love

a) This was an emphasis that Jesus made when He taught His disciples (Cf. John 13:34-35).
b) It is only fitting that this emphasis of Jesus be maintained.

2. Continue

It was important that “brotherly love” be sustained. So many things can threaten “brotherly love”. Every effort must be made to continue to practise “brotherly love”. The cause of Christ would be that much more effectively served through love.
