"Our God is a consuming fire."

MANY ATTRIBUTES

God has many attributes! The Scriptures portray many attributes of God. All are truly awesome. The author of Hebrews chooses his “favourite” attribute of God.

“For our God is a consuming fire.”
Hebrews 12:29

1. For our God

a) The Lord is always presented as a very personal God.
b) The use of the personal pronoun “our” confirms this understanding and usage

2. God

a) There is some danger in relating to God in a personal way.
b) The danger lies in “over-familiarity”.
c) The features include the following:-
i) Taking God for granted.
ii) There is a loss of reverence and fear in serving God.
iii) There is a lack of consciousness of “grace” when serving the Lord.
iv) There is poor regard for the Word of God.
v) There is poor appreciation of the eternal kingdom of God.

3. A consuming fire

a) This phrase is drawn from the context of God speaking to Israel at Mount Sinai
(Cf. Exodus 19-20).
b) Fire was one of the elements used to describe the majesty of God.
c) “Consuming fire” suggests that God is not to be trifled with.
d) To trifle with a great and mighty God puts the individual in grave danger of being consumed by that holy fire of God.
