Yet once more...

Text: Hebrews 12:27

SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE

Every word of God has significance! Each word is designed to fit its own particular and intended purpose. The author of Hebrews suggests that there is special significance in this word from the Lord.

“Yet once more I shake not only the earth,
but also heaven.
Now this, ‘Yet once more,’ indicates the removal
of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made,
that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.”
Hebrews 12:26b-27

1. “Yet once more”

a) An explanation was offered by the writer.
b) His explanation offers invaluable insight into Haggai 2:6 (from which this text was drawn).
c) Haggai’s original word of encouragement was to focus on encouraging the returnees from the Babylonian exile to rebuild the temple.
d) In order to rebuild the temple, much debris had to be removed before any attempt could be made to build the new temple.
e) The writer of Hebrews went beyond the historical context to ponder the spiritual and eternal.
f) His focus was on God’s final plan to establish the spiritual and eternal.

2. Indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken

a) The idea of “sifting” seems very strong here.
b) There is a purposeful separation between two things:-
i) The temporal
ii) The eternal

3. That the things which cannot be shaken may remain

God has an ultimate plan. It has to do with His eternal kingdom. Jesus is the King of that kingdom which will remain forever!
