"Yet once more I shake not only the earth..."

Text: Hebrews 12:26

THE VOICE OF THE LORD

The voice of the Lord was deemed so majestic that an entire psalm was devoted to extol His voice (Cf. Psalm 29). The writer of Hebrews absolutely agrees with the psalmist David when he wrote a psalm devoted to the Voice of the Lord (In Hebrew Qol Adonai). Two features about the Lord’s voice may be highlighted:-

1. The power and majesty of God’s voice (Cf. Psalm 29:4).

2. The voice of the Lord affects all creation (Cf. Psalm 29:3-9).

THE POWER OF GOD’S VOICE

The following text highlights the significance of the power of God’s voice.

“Whose voice then shook the earth;
but now He has promised, saying,
‘Yet once more I shake not only the earth,
but also heaven.'”
Hebrews 12:26

1. Whose voice then shook the earth

a) This text harks back to the time when God spoke to Israel audibly (Cf. Exodus 19:18; 20:18-22).

b) Mount Sinai trembled when God addressed Israel and gave them the Decalogue (Cf. Exodus 20:1-17).

2. But now He has promised

a) This promise may be traced to the words of Haggai the prophet (Cf. Haggai 2:6).
b) This prophetic promise focused on the restoration of glory to the temple (Cf. Haggai 2:7)

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE VOICE OF THE LORD HIGHLIGHTED

The following thoughts are worthwhile pondering over deeply:-

1. There should be a sense of awe in the heart when we think about God speaking to us.

2. There should be a natural and strong desire to obey the voice of the Lord.

3. Alarm bells should be ringing loudly in us warning about the danger of:-

a) Refusing to hear God’s voice!
b) Rejecting God’s voice!
