"By faith Abel offered to God..."

Text: Hebrews 11:4

THE APPLICATION OF FAITH

Faith is not just a feeling we possess. Neither is it some academic knowledge of God we have in our mind. True faith is always something we can and must apply in life.

“By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice
than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was
righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it
he being dead still speaks.”
Hebrews 11:4

1. By faith Abel

a) Abel was one of the sons of Adam (Cf. Genesis 4).
b) He is described in this text as one who possessed faith.

2. Offered to God a more excellent sacrifice

a) How did he know what to offer a more excellent sacrifice?
i) By faith he knew God.
ii) By faith he learned how to worship God.
iii) By faith he presented an offering that pleased God.
iv) What was God really pleased with? Abel’s faith in Him!

3. Than Cain

a) Cain was another son of Adam (Cf. Genesis 4).
b) Faith was not ascribed or associated with Cain (he is pictured as a contrast to faith).
c) The following were associated with Cain (Cf. Genesis 4; 1 John 3:12-15)
i) He was a man given to anger.
ii) He was one who allowed his anger to get the better of him.
iii) His anger saw him kill his own brother.
iv) He was described as one associated with the devil (Cf. 1 John 3:12).
