A LIST OF HEROES OF THE FAITH
We have an admirable list of heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11! These heroes were people of bygone days. Nevertheless they were presented as people who had a living faith.
THE TESTIMONY OF GENUINE FAITH
Faith has many elements. The following text suggests a number of them.
“For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.”
Hebrews 11:2
1. For by it (faith)
a) Faith is seen as an instrument.
b) It is an excellent means of appropriation:-
i) Of grace and mercy from God.
ii) Of the favour and blessing of God.
2. The elders
a) From the context the term “elders” would refer to the heroes named in Hebrews 11.
b) It could also include contemporary heroes who were regarded as “elders” in the community of faith (Cf. 1 Peter 5:1 The apostle Peter called himself an “elder”).
3. Obtained a good testimony
a) The title “elder” does not in itself give honour to the individual.
b) It is rather the faith of the elder that brings him the honour.
c) A good testimony (“witness”)
i) A good testimony has to be well-earned.
ii) It does not come by mere profession of faith.
iii) It has to come by a life of faith.
iv) This life of faith is so distinct that it is rightly called “a good testimony”.
