Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67
A WONDERFUL REPLY TO PRAYER
The faith of Eliezer was not in vain! His prayer efforts were well-rewarded and more! In swift reply to Eliezer’s prayer of faith, God gave His answer.
“And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold,
Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of
Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with a pitcher
on her shoulder. Now the young woman was very beautiful
to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up.” GENESIS 24:15-16
1. “Go to my country and to my family” Genesis 24:4
This was Abraham’s word of instruction to his trusted servant, Eliezer. Through eyes of faith, he believed that his old servant would find a suitable bride for his son Isaac.
2. “Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother…”
Was this mere coincidence or was it God’s gracious and wonderful provision? Only with eyes of faith can we appreciate the wonderful involvement of God! Long before Abraham had even thought about getting a wife for Isaac, God had already prepared Rebekah!
3. “Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold”
Eliezer had not asked the Lord to provide a beautiful bride for Isaac. It would be enough to have a kind-hearted and hardworking woman! Rebekah was all that and more! She was also beautiful!
4. “A virgin; no man had known her”
This statement suggests two implications at least. The first suggests that she was still eligible. With her beauty, she should have been married long ago! The second thought is that she was a virtuous young lady who had good and strong moral values!
WOULD REBEKAH PASS THE TEST?
Eliezer lost no time in testing Rebekah to see if she was the one for whom he had prayed, as a prospective wife for Isaac.
“And the servant ran to meet her and said,
‘Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.'”GENESIS 24:17
The old servant must have rehearsed what he was going to say to the prospective bride to be! He gave no hint whatsoever that he needed anything more than a drink! Would Rebekah be that special answer to his prayer?
