"But God forbid that I should boast..."

Text: Galatians 6:14a

IN THE CROSS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

The Judaizers boasted in the number of people they were able to convert to their cause. The Apostle Paul took a very firm stand against this worldly way of thinking.

But God forbid that I should boast except in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world
has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor
uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.

Galatians 6:14-15

1. Boasting in success

a) The Judaizers boasted in their “success” in winning converts to their cause.
b) Paul could have “boasted” in his success in winning people to Christ.
i) He was immensely successful.
ii) He must have led thousands to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ over the years.

2. Boasting in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ

a) Paul rejected the world’s way of boasting in success.
b) If there was anything to boast about it would be “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

3. Crucified

a) The world and all it stands for were crucified to Paul.
b) Paul was crucified to the world.

4. In Christ Jesus

a) The cross of Christ and all it symbolises matter.
b) Circumcision does not matter.
c) Uncircumcision does not matter either.

THE THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST

The apostle developed a strong theology concerning the cross of Christ.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those
who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is
the power of God.
For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;
but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block
and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called,
both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God
and the wisdom of God.
