Galatians
Day
Day 9

"Let him be accursed."

Text: Galatians 1:8c

A SOLEMN DECLARATION

How serious was the problem of presenting “a different gospel”? Paul took this matter very seriously.

But even if we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel to you than what we have
preached to you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:8

1. “But even if”

a) This word “if” is a very remote possibility.
b) This was a theoretical consideration.

2. “We, or an angel from heaven”

a) “We”
i) Paul
ii) Or any of the brethren with him.
b) “An angel from heaven”
i) Angels were messengers of God too.
ii) In this sense, as a messenger, he was subject to this apostolic declaration.

3. “Preach any other gospel”

a) Any other gospel is a reference to “a different gospel”.
b) There wasn’t “any other gospel” in the Gospel.
c) The content of the Gospel cannot be changed or it would be a perversion.

4. “Than what we have preached to you”

a) This Gospel was proclaimed by all the apostles.
b) It was a gospel of redemption from sin and Satan.
c) It was a redemption made possible through the death of the Lord Jesus.
d) In God’s will Jesus was raised from the dead for our justification.

5. “Let him be accursed”

a) This is called “an anathema” (Galatians 1:9).
b) Any perversion of the gospel will result in a curse from God.
c) No one is exempt, not apostles and not even angels.
