Day 2

"In whom is the Spirit of God."

Text: Genesis 41:38

FOCUS

The mention of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Genesis is scanty. However, this is understandable because of the focus of the Book.

1. The focus on man

a) To trace the origin of man.
b) Man was more than just flesh and blood.
c) Man was given a spirit (Genesis 1-2).

2. The focus on the problem of sin

a) To trace how sin came into the world.
b) To track how sin affected mankind badly.
c) To note how God had to deal with the problem of sin (Genesis 3-6).

3. The focus on God’s covenants with man

a) God’s covenant with Noah.
i) This would reflect God’s relationship with the world.
ii) The mercy and glory of the Lord is well reflected in this covenant (Genesis 8).
b) God’s covenant with Abraham
i) This covenant would involve Israel.
ii) This covenant also included a redemptive Messianic angle where Gentiles would be blessed through the Seed of Abraham (Genesis 22).

THE SPIRIT OF GOD INDWELLING MAN

God would sometimes indicate major problems like famine to certain individuals. The Pharaoh of Egypt had two dreams that puzzled and bothered him immensely. No one could interpret these dreams that he felt was of great importance.

In His divine wisdom He had prepared Joseph to be that special interpreter of Pharaoh’s dreams. When he successfully interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, the ruler of Egypt exclaimed.

“And Pharaoh said to his servants,
‘Can we find such a one as this,
a man in whom is the Spirit of God?'”
Genesis 41:38

1. Pharaoh could not have personally known the Holy Spirit.

2. However he recognised that the Spirit of God must have indwelt Joseph and granted him profound wisdom.

3. This text is a gentle intimation of how the Spirit of God would function.

4. The Spirit of God would also anoint and empower the Messiah in His life and ministry (Isaiah 11:2).
