"And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

Text: Genesis 1:2

CREATION OF THE EARTH

Who was involved in the creation of the earth? It is only when we read from different texts in the Scriptures that we see the involvement of the following: –

1. God

a) He is clearly identified as the Creator (Genesis 1:1).
b) This fact is declared often (Isaiah 40:28; Psalm 104:5-6).

2. The Lord Jesus Christ

a) The Apostle declared that all things were made through Him (John 1:3).
b) The Apostle Paul agrees with this statement (Colossians 1:16).

3. The Holy Spirit

a) He was certainly there when God created the earth (Genesis 1:2).
b) The exact role He played is not fully disclosed though.

SIGNIFICANCE

What significance may we draw from this statement about the Holy Spirit?

“And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
Genesis 1:2

1. The word “Spirit”

a) It may be rendered “breath”.
b) It may also be rendered “wind”.
c) It may also be translated as “spirit”.

2. “Hovering over the face of the waters”

a) The picture communicated may be compared to a bird brooding over a nest.
b) The presence of the Spirit is one of deep personal involvement.

3. Several observations that may be made

a) The Person of the Spirit of God is to be noted.
b) The Spirit’s Presence was there at creation.
c) The Spirit’s Power to give life must also be noted.

4. An introduction of the future ministry of the Holy Spirit

a) The reader is alerted to the future ministry of the Spirit of God.
b) His involvement in the life of the children of God would be more clearly revealed in later texts.
