"Joint-heirs with Christ..."

Text: Romans 8:17

HEIRS OF GOD

How glorious is God’s plan of salvation! Not only have we been forgiven of our sins, we become children of God. This special blessing is further explained by the Apostle Paul in this text.

“And if children, then heirs- heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,
if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
Romans 8:17

1. “And if children”

a) The “if” in this text does not suggest “uncertainty”.
b) The “if” suggests a certainty that has ramifications.
c) The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are indeed the children of God.

2. “Then heirs- heirs of God”

a) The idea of being “heirs” is truly astonishing.
b) Thus the word is repeated in the very next phrase “heirs of God”.
c) This is “logical”.
i) Being children of God includes the fact that He will make us “heirs”.
ii) Heirs of God is not something to be taken for granted at all.

3. “Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ”

a) The two phrases are to be read together.
b) They explain the word “heirs”.
c) A special grammatical construction was used:
i) On the one hand “heirs of God”.
ii) On the other hand, “joint heirs with Christ”.

4. Christ Jesus

a) He is the original Heir of God.
b) Through our adoption as children of God we become “joint heirs with Christ”.
c) This is truly profound and this truth should never be taken for granted.

5. “If indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together”

a) We should never be afraid to suffer with the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Our identification with Christ in suffering will result in our being glorified together with the Lord Jesus.
