"The Spirit Himself bears witness..."

Text: Romans 8:16

ANOTHER SPECIAL MINISTRY

The Holy Spirit has another important function in the life of the believer. The following text sheds important light as to how the Spirit of God bears witness with our own spirit.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God.”
Romans 8:16

1. The concept of “bearing witness”

a) This is an age-old concept that dates all the way back to Moses (Deuteronomy 17:6).
b) The law of Moses declares that at least two or three witnesses must be found to establish a fact.

2. The Lord Jesus Himself practised this principle

a) He called upon four witnesses to bear testimony as to who He is.
b) John 5 records this very clearly.
i) John the Baptiser was a witness. John 5:32
ii) His works bore witness. John 5:36
iii) God the Father bore witness too. John 5:37
iv) The Scriptures bore witness as well. John 5:39

3. “The Spirit Himself bears witness”

a) The Holy Spirit Himself as a Witness is truly wondrous.
b) There is no greater witness than that of the Spirit of God.
c) He bears witness in a number of ways:
i) The believer will bear fruit in his life.
ii) His life will be like “a new creation”.
iii) He will become a more prayerful individual.

4. “With our spirit that we are children of God”

a) Man is essentially made up of two parts:
i) The body (which is visible)
ii) The spirit which is invisible)
b) The human spirit will be able to:
i) Recognise and respond to the Spirit of God.
ii) The truly born again believer will be able to respond effectively to the Spirit of God.
