"Tarshish was your merchant"

Text: Ezekiel 27:12

AN EXTENSIVE LIST OF TRADING PARTNERS

Ezekiel listed an extensive list of trading partners of Tyre. For a small kingdom, Tyre did extremely well in business.

“Tarshish was your merchant
because of your many luxury goods.
They gave you silver, iron, tin, and lead for your goods.
Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders.
They bartered human lives
and vessels of bronze for your merchandise.”
Ezekiel 27:12-13

1. Tarshish

a) This was a city in Spain.

b) It was made famous when Jonah sought to flee from God’s command to go to Nineveh.

c) He tried to flee to Tarshish which is in the opposite direction of Nineveh
(Jonah 1).

d) Tarshish was a merchant of Tyre.

e) It bought many “luxury goods” from Tyre.

f) Tyre was paid with:

i) Silver

ii) Iron

iii) Tin

iv) Lead

2. Other traders were also mentioned:

a) Javan was a city in ancient Greece (Mediterranean)

b) Tubal and Mesech were often mentioned together.
They were located in Turkey.

c) These partners paid for their goods from Tyre:

i) With human lives.

ii) With bronze vessels.

Tyre traded freely with anyone and was willing to take payment of any kind, including human slaves!
