"Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand."

Text: Ephesians 6:13

MORE ABOUT KING DAVID

David was a man of multiple talents. Though he came from the humblest of backgrounds, being a shepherd, he went on to become outstanding in many areas. Three may be singled out:-

1. As King of Israel (Cf. 1 Samuel 16:1, 12)

2. As one of the most prolific of psalmists (Check out the Book of Psalms)

3. As a prophet (Cf. Acts 2:30)

The following text does justice to the kind of man David was.

Then one of the servants (of Saul) answered and said,
‘Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite,
who is skillful in playing (the harp),
a mighty man of valour, a man of war, prudent in speech,
and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him.’
1 SAMUEL 16:18

DAVID’S VIEW OF LIFE

Being a warrior, David found himself looking at life from the standpoint of warfare. Many of his psalms reflected this view of life. Even when it came to the matter of relating to God in his faith, David used imagery drawn from warfare. Let us consider some of these statements.

The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
PSALM 18:2

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.

He teaches my hands to make war so that my arms can bend
a bow of bronze.
You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up.
PSALM 18:32, 34-35

1. Not a wrong view at all

It is not wrong for David (nor for us) to view life as a battle-field rather than a playing field. To include a view of life as a battle-field stood David in good stead.

2. A healthy view

David held a healthy view of life. He found time to worship God. He went on to devote his life to developing Israel into a strong nation.
