Ephesians
Day
Day 41

"That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him…"

Text: Ephesians 1:17

ADDRESSING ALL PRAYERS TO GOD THE FATHER

How should we address all our prayers? It is good that we learn how to address our prayers correctly.

1. The teaching of the Lord Jesus

It was the Lord Jesus who taught that all prayers must ascend to the Father. Thus, in “The Lord’s Prayer” He taught His disciples to say,

“Our Father in heaven…”
MATTHEW 6:9 (CF. LUKE 11:2)

Jesus consistently directed His own prayers to His Father too.

“Father, the hour has come…
And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself.”
JOHN 17:1, 5

2. The practice of the apostle Paul

Consistently, Paul addressed all his prayers to the Father. Paul addressed God the Father in a rather formal way too.

“The God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of Glory…”
EPHESIANS 1:17

THE ROLE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IN PRAYER

What then is the role of the Lord Jesus Christ in the ministry of prayer? The Book of Hebrews offers vital instruction as to His role.

“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,
consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession,
Christ Jesus.”
HEBREWS 3:1

“You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek.”
HEBREWS 7:17

“Now this is the main point of the things we are saying:
We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand
of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens…”
HEBREWS 8:1

All our prayers must be made in the name of the Lord Jesus, our Mediator and High Priest!

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN PRAYER

His role is just as vital. He will direct our hearts to pray to the Father.

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear,
but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out,
‘Abba, Father.'”
ROMANS 8:15
