"The profit of the land is for all"

Text: Ecclesiastes 5:9

SEEKING PROFIT

It is not wrong to seek profit from the work we endeavour to do. No one starts a business without seeking profit. The problem does not lie with the principle of profit but with the perversity of men.

“Moreover the profit of the land is for all;
even the king is served from the field.”
Ecclesiastes 5:9

1. “Moreover the profit of the land is for all”

a) The land stands for
i) The fields.
ii) The country.
b) Much profit may be gained.
i) When the fields are cultivated properly.
ii) They can provide good pastureland for flocks and herds.
iii) The economy of the whole land can make a country strong and wealthy.
c) “For all”
i) This was a truth that needed emphasis.
ii) The land is not just to create more wealth for the strong.
iii) The land’s profit is to benefit all in the country.
d) There must be no oppression
i) Of the peasants.
ii) Of the people who do humble jobs.

2. “Even the king is served from the field”

a) This was a needed reminder.
b) The king’s needs are met from the field.
c) The land must not be seen as owned by the rich and powerful.
i) Everyone contributes to the prosperity of the country.
ii) Thus, all who till the land humbly must not be oppressed.
