Dealing With Our Sins

Text: Colossians 2:14

How important it is to know that God has a powerful plan to deal with the problem of our sins! Some deny the reality of sin. Others play down the significance of the effect of sin. The apostle Paul preferred to look at the problem of sin candidly and he offered an uplifting teaching in the following text!

“Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements
that was against us, which was contrary to us.
And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
Colossians 2:14

1. Imagery for sin

a) This was compared to “handwriting” (Greek “cheirophon”).
b) This word refers to a debt that has been handwritten.
c) Each sin is like a debt and it is written down.
d) This is a stark and striking way of comparing our sins to debts.

2. Handwriting of requirements

a) The word “requirements” literally means “laws and regulations”.
b) When we sin we actually break the laws and regulations of God.
c) These are the sins that are written down by hand.
d) These sins would certainly be “against us!”
e) Our sins certainly work contrary to us.

3. What God does with our sins is truly awesome and profound

a) He has cancelled our sins.
b) He has cancelled the handwritten bill of debts which were against us.
c) He has taken our sin out of the way.
d) He has indeed nailed it (that is, “the handwriting of the regulations”) to the cross.

A GLORIOUS ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM OF SIN

What a glorious divine answer to the problem of our sins! We do not have to be worried about the penalty or consequences of our sins anymore! God has provided a solution that is truly astounding. When next we think of the cross on which Christ died, let us think about what God has done.

1. He has dealt with the penalty of our sin once and for all.

2. He has effectively removed all our worries.

3. The death of Christ is the answer to the weighty problem of sin.

4. The atonement of Christ Jesus our Lord must never be taken for granted.
