The Person Of Christ

Text: Colossians 2:9

The apostle Paul did not budge from his theological understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
Colossians 2:9

1. “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead”

Let us ponder these three closely related statements!

a) Christ was the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).
b) It pleased the Father that all the fullness should dwell (Colossians 1:19).
c) In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9).

2. Subtle attacks against Christ

a) There were those who opposed Paul’s theology of Christ.
b) There were many who were detractors.
c) The following were some of their opinions about Christ.
i) Christ was not Deity.
ii) He was not co-equal with God.
iii) He was only a creation of God- albeit the highest being, but still only created.
iv) Christ was said to be lower than God because He possessed a physical body.
v) Body was regarded as matter; the latter was regarded as evil.

3. In stout defence of Christ’s Deity

a) He was the express image of God.
i) All that God was, Christ was.
ii) Paul echoed the common view of all the apostles.
b) God the Father was pleased.
i) He was not displeased that Christ should be regarded as God.
ii) He was glad that the fullness of the Being of God was in Christ.
c) The fullness of the Godhead was in Christ bodily.
i) Christ was thus fully man and fully God.
ii) These are called the dual natures of Christ Jesus.
iii) Christ had a physical body because He came to redeem man from sin.
