Further Analysis

Text: Colossians 2:8

Paul offered further analysis of the philosophical systems that posed as a threat to the Colossians.

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty
deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the
basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”
Colossians 2:8

1. “According to the basic principles of the world”

a) The phrase “basic principles” is a reference to the source of the philosophy propounded.
b) The preposition “kata” translated “according to” suggests the pattern of thought as well.
c) “Basic principles”
i) This word was used in Hebrews 5:12 and translated “first principles”.
ii) This system was not impressive in the least.
iii) How would “basic principles of the world” be able to give answers to a complex world system?

2. “And not according to Christ”

a) Paul now speaks of the Christian system of thought.
i) He presents it as a system.
ii) He posits that it is far better than “philosophy and empty deceit”.
b) “According to Christ” was Paul’s pattern of thought.
c) He offers a Christ-Centred theological system of thought.
i) Christ as the Lord- Colossians 1:3
ii) As the Image of the invisible God- Colossians 1:15
iii) As the Co-Creator of the world- Colossians 1:16
iv) As the Head of the church- Colossians 1:18
v) In Him all the fullness of God is found- Colossians 1:19
vi) He is the One who reconciles man to God- Colossians 1:21
vii) He is the One who presents us faultless before God- Colossians 1:22
viii) The Lord Jesus indwells every believer- Colossians 1:27
d) None of the philosophical systems of thought can match these glorious teachings found in the Christian faith.
