"You shall worship the LORD your God..."

Text: Matthew 4:10

A SWIFT AND FIRM RESPONSE

Without hesitation the Lord Jesus replied to this temptation. He saw through the ploy of Satan!

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written,
“You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.”‘”
Matthew 4:10

1. “Away with you, Satan”

a) This was a word of rebuke.
b) Jesus addressed the devil as “Satan”.
c) He dismissed this temptation outright!
d) This was not even worth considering.

2. “It is written”

a) Once again we see how Jesus made reference to the Scriptures.
i) It was authoritative.
ii) It was instructive.
iii) Man was to live by every word that proceeded from the mouth of God.
b) Jesus would continue to adhere to the Scriptures.
c) In it was God’s decretive will.

3. “You shall worship the LORD your God”

a) The very first commandment speaks of having no other gods (Deuteronomy 5:7).
i) Jesus would never bow His knees to Satan.
ii) There was only one God to worship.
b) He is “The LORD your God”.
i) He is the Lord God of the whole earth.
ii) He is also the Lord God to whom Satan must bow in worship.

4. “And Him only you shall serve”

a) Where there is worship there would also be service.
b) Worship and service were opposite sides of the same coin as far as Jesus was concerned.
c) He would always offer worship and service to the LORD God.
d) No glory of any kingdom is a worthy substitute of worshipping God and serving Him faithfully.
