"Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:7

MORE INSIGHTS

The Apostle Paul had much to say about these false and deceptive people. The following text gives a further glimpse of these people.

“Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
2 Timothy 3:7

1. “Always learning”

a) This is an interesting observation made by the apostle Paul.
b) These false, worldly-wise people are “always learning”.
c) But what were the contents?
d) If what they learn produce bad characteristics then the substance of their knowledge is of doubtful value.
e) The things learned may even be in the form of theological or Biblical knowledge.

2. “Never able to come to the knowledge of the truth”

a) Paul distinguishes between the learning process and the final outcome.
b) Thus there is a distinction between knowledge and truth.
c) Knowledge
i) Just information
ii) Facts
iii) Opinions and views (and there are many of them)
iv) These are just of intellectual interest and little more.
d) Truth
i) The Lord Jesus spoke about truth that makes one free (John 8:32).
ii) Truth is understood only when the Spirit of God illumines the mind.
iii) Truth obtained will cause the individual to be godly and righteous.
e) How may we know if a person has not obtained truth?
i) The individual continues to be carnal.
ii) He is still very much characterised by what Paul wrote (2 Timothy 3:2-5).
iii) They will only have a form of godliness but they will not have the power of God.
iv) Those who follow them are in danger of possessing similar characteristics.
