"He remains faithful..."

Text: 2 Timothy 2:13

WEAKNESSES IN LIFE

If we are candid with ourselves, we will recognise that there are many weaknesses in our life. The number of weaknesses can sometimes be embarrassing! One such weakness is highlighted in this text.

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful;
He cannot deny Himself.”
2 Timothy 2:13

1. “If we are faithless”

a) This is perhaps not the best way to translate the text.
i) It seems to describe a state of faithlessness.
ii) It seems to describe a person who has lost his faith altogether.
b) Another way of translating the text:-
i) “If we do not believe”
ii) The focus is on the act of not believing.
iii) It could be a momentary act of not believing in the Lord.
iv) But it does not need to suggest a perpetual state of unbelief.
c) The example of the original disciples of the Lord Jesus.
i) They were rebuked for their lack of faith (Mark 4:40).
ii) But they learned from their mistakes and went on to become great apostles.

2. “He remains faithful”

a) Thank God that we have a wonderfully faithful Saviour.
b) He knows all our weaknesses and He abides faithfully.
c) He is our great and sympathetic High Priest who stands by us (Hebrews 4:14-16).
d) He is not ashamed to call us His brethren, despite our moments of weakness (Hebrews 2:11).

3. “He cannot deny Himself”

a) How wonderful it is to know this glorious truth.
b) We may deny the Lord in a moment of weakness, but He will not deny us because of that.
c) We may not always have a strong faith and there may be moments when we struggle to believe, but He will not deny us because of our weak faith.
d) The nature of the Lord is truly well-described here. “He remains faithful!”
e) Let us be moved to deepen and strengthen our faith in our great and faithful Lord.
